The Slaves That Time Forgot

By John Martin

They came as slaves; vast human cargo transported on tall British ships bound for the Americas. They were shipped by the hundreds of thousands and included men, women, and even the youngest of children.

Whenever they rebelled or even disobeyed an order, they were punished in the harshest ways. Slave owners would hang their human property by their hands and set their hands or feet on fire as one form of punishment. They were burned alive and had their heads placed on pikes in the marketplace as a warning to other captives.

We don’t really need to go through all of the gory details, do we? After all, we know all too well the atrocities of the African slave trade. But, are we talking about African slavery?

King James II and Charles I led a continued effort to enslave the Irish. Britain’s famed Oliver Cromwell furthered this practice of dehumanizing one’s next door neighbor.

The Irish slave trade began when James II sold 30,000 Irish prisoners as slaves to the New World. His Proclamation of 1625 required Irish political prisoners be sent overseas and sold to English settlers in the West Indies. By the mid 1600s, the Irish were the main slaves sold to Antigua and Montserrat. At that time, 70% of the total population of Montserrat were Irish slaves.

Ireland quickly became the biggest source of human livestock for English merchants. The majority of the early slaves to the New World were actually white.

From 1641 to 1652, over 500,000 Irish were killed by the English and another 300,000 were sold as slaves. Ireland’s population fell from about 1,500,000 to 600,000 in one single decade. Families were ripped apart as the British did not allow Irish dads to take their wives and children with them across the Atlantic. This led to a helpless population of homeless women and children. Britain’s solution was to auction them off as well.

During the 1650s, over 100,000 Irish children between the ages of 10 and 14 were taken from their parents and sold as slaves in the West Indies, Virginia and New England. In this decade, 52,000 Irish (mostly women and children) were sold to Barbados and Virginia. Another 30,000 Irish men and women were also transported and sold to the highest bidder. In 1656, Cromwell ordered that 2000 Irish children be taken to Jamaica and sold as slaves to English settlers.

Many people today will avoid calling the Irish slaves what they truly were: Slaves. They’ll come up with terms like “Indentured Servants” to describe what occurred to the Irish. However, in most cases from the 17th and 18th centuries, Irish slaves were nothing more than human cattle.

As an example, the African slave trade was just beginning during this same period. It is well recorded that African slaves, not tainted with the stain of the hated Catholic theology and more expensive to purchase, were often treated far better than their Irish counterparts.

African slaves were very expensive during the late 1600s (50 Sterling). Irish slaves came cheap (no more than 5 Sterling). If a planter whipped or branded or beat an Irish slave to death, it was never a crime. A death was a monetary setback, but far cheaper than killing a more expensive African.

The English masters quickly began breeding the Irish women for both their own personal pleasure and for greater profit. Children of slaves were themselves slaves, which increased the size of the master’s free workforce. Even if an Irish woman somehow obtained her freedom, her kids would remain slaves of her master. Thus, Irish moms, even with this new found emancipation, would seldom abandon their kids and would remain in servitude.

In time, the English thought of a better way to use these women (in many cases, girls as young as 12) to increase their market share: The settlers began to breed Irish women and girls with African men to produce slaves with a distinct complexion. These new “mulatto” slaves brought a higher price than Irish livestock and, likewise, enabled the settlers to save money rather than purchase new African slaves.

This practice of interbreeding Irish females with African men went on for several decades and was so widespread that, in 1681, legislation was passed “forbidding the practice of mating Irish slave women to African slave men for the purpose of producing slaves for sale.” In short, it was stopped only because it interfered with the profits of a large slave transport company.

England continued to ship tens of thousands of Irish slaves for more than a century. Records state that, after the 1798 Irish Rebellion, thousands of Irish slaves were sold to both America and Australia.

There were horrible abuses of both African and Irish captives. One British ship even dumped 1,302 slaves into the Atlantic Ocean so that the crew would have plenty of food to eat.

There is little question that the Irish experienced the horrors of slavery as much (if not more in the 17th Century) as the Africans did. There is, also, very little question that those brown, tanned faces you witness in your travels to the West Indies are very likely a combination of African and Irish ancestry.

In 1839, Britain finally decided on it’s own to end it’s participation in Satan’s highway to hell and stopped transporting slaves. While their decision did not stop pirates from doing what they desired, the new law slowly concluded THIS chapter of nightmarish Irish misery.

But, if anyone, black or white, believes that slavery was only an African experience, then they’ve got it completely wrong.

Irish slavery is a subject worth remembering, not erasing from our memories. But, where are our public (and PRIVATE) schools???? Where are the history books? Why is it so seldom discussed?

Do the memories of hundreds of thousands of Irish victims merit more than a mention from an unknown writer? Or is their story to be one that their English pirates intended: To (unlike the African book) have the Irish story utterly and completely disappear as if it never happened.

None of the Irish victims ever made it back to their homeland to describe their ordeal. These are the lost slaves; the ones that time and biased history books conveniently forgot.

  1. becouse the afro americans are the tribe of Juda . you are one of the 12 tribes of Ysrael. the Isrealites who we know today are the khazars from askenazi tribe of Jengis Khan

  2. I think that this whole Israelite shit is a whole bunch of bullshit. They just went around fucking up all of the black nations of the world, & using the bible to justify their evil deeds.
Some people take it way too fucking seriously. I don’t believe this whole thing about how “The slaves were not Africans, they are Isrealites”

The slaves are of African Descent, they are Africans. I

If they were Hebrews than they would have been taken from the Middle East/Ethiopia & then bought to West Africa. They would have also spoke Amharic.

They even went after the descendents of Ham, which the majority of black people in the USA are, Indigenous Black People. They bought at maximum about 400,000 slaves to the USA, & that really only went to the 13 original colonies & Louisiana. These slaves were than intermixed with the indigenous population.

Like I said before, the majority of slaves went to the Caribbean, not the United States.

Dominicans are indigenous to Hispanola, they were not African slaves.

They look very similar to Habesha people in Ethiopia, as do Puerto Ricans Cubans, & East Indians.

The Aboriginal, Indigenous, Autochthon, Pre-Adamites known today as Latinos, West Indians, Blacks, Afro/African Americans, Negros were NOT slaves but enslaved or became prisoners of war. They are today under the occupation of a Corporation. They will do everything possible to keep you from rising back up as the original first class status holder and owner of the ENTIRE western hemisphere of Northwestern and Southwestern Africa known today as North, Central, South America and the Caribbean Islands.

They just made you think that all of the so-called black people in the west were bought here on slave ships, but that is from from the truth. They labeled you as African to hide your true history, A lot of you were already here, you just got captured & enslaved.

the Moors were a Multicultural group, not just Negroes with big lips & flat wide noses. There is no such thing as a Black Caucasian. read this: http://bluebloodisblackblood.blogspot.com/2011/05/blue-blood-is-black-blood-1500-1789.html

  3. For Dominicans mostly descendants of african slaves :

    1. “Raza e Historia en Santo Domingo” by Tolentino Dipp
    2. ” La esclavitud del negro en Santo Domingo 1492-1844″ by Carlos esteban deive
    3. ” La Presencia negra en Santo Domingo” by Carlos Andujar
    4. “Los Negros y la esclavitud en Santo Domingo” by Carlos Larrazabal Blanco

I know this country from north/south to east/west

Dominicans have strong african features ( from CONGO/ANGOLA) and are mixed with European and Natives, the biggest racial component is african :

    – Phenotypes
    – Food
    – Their spanish is highly influenced by african tongues ( See John Lipski)
    – African religions and believes still present in Palos and Catholicism
    – Music, merengue is played with Tambora (from Nigeria) and the rythmn which is the root of merengue is called CATA, and its from CONGO/ANGOLA ( Bantu origin)…

The Dominican republic was the spanish clearing house for slaves in the new world ( sent towards mexico, puerto rico, jamaica before the english) like Jamaica was later the slave clearing house for English.

There were african slave confreries in the Dominican republic (see Larrazabal Blanco) ,and the 1st slave revolt of the new world occured in 1522 in that country…

In Puerto Rico , Dominicans are discriminated because they have strong african features.

Haitians abolished slavery in the Dominican republic in 1822 , freed the slaves and gave them the lands. The white slave owner elite fled to Puerto Rico, Cuba etc and since that day inspired the actual national hatred towards haitians…Their own brethen ( bulk of the population, the “white elite” doesn’t mix with them though…)

Why abolish slavery when slavery doesn’t exist ? at least 90 % of the dominican republic has african ancestors…

Trujillo the racist who had himself african ancestors ( on his mother side) tried to whiten the country :

    – 1st by killing: haitian and black dominicans massacre in 1937
    – 2nd by favorable immigration laws towards european ( like Argentina) : all crooks, gangsters, prostitutes went to the DR ( Italians, corsicans, french, spanish etc)
    – 3rd he also welcome jews during the WWII

Many black dominicans Ruth Ocumarez, Venya Carolina , Ada Aimee de la Cruz etc

    1. Were do people get claiming that the slaves that went to the west indies were more rebellious than the ones that landed in America? surely there is no proof of this, but a lot of people have made this claim for some time now. I would like to bring this to light however, during the slavetrade, the phrase RIDE OR DIE became known. They would either RIDE along with the EUROPEANS to an unknown land, or they would prefer DEATH and jump overboard or take over the ship. The european was so cruel back then, and still is, that he would throw so many slaves overboard that sharks would follow the slave ships. To me its not a matter of looking at the west indies and going, yeah we can tell they are stronger because they are most rebellious because the fact remains that WE ALL HAVE BEEN TAKEN AWAY FROM AFRICA, especially if you are of RECENT AFRICAN DESCENT…meaning MANKINDS ORIGIN IS IN AFRICA, therefore WE ALL ARE AFRICANS, even the EUROPEANS, but RECENT AFRICAN DESCENT MEANS that IF YOU ARE STILL DARK or considered BLACK, THEN YOUR BLOODLINE HAS BEEN AFRICAN THE WHOLE WAY THROUGH. THE SEED STARTED BLACK AND IT IS STILL CURRENTLY BLACK. In the CASE OF THE EUROPEAN, his skin is SAID TO HAVE TURNED WHITE DUE TO A COLDER CLIMATE. If we all are Africans then We all should be the same people, just different features have devoloped due to different requirements. I dont know if this is why the European has developed white skin, but I do know that A European has never had a BLACK CHILD and NEVER WILL, therefore DOMINANT ALWAYS OVER RECCESSIVE. My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge and WE WERE TAKEN FROM ALL OVER THAT CONTINENT THEY CALL AFRICA. I can trace my origin to WEST AFRICA and I don’t need a European to tell me…I JUST KNOW WHERE I COME FROM and the West African’s were part of that BANTU MIGRATION….shall we continue?

  4. A lot of the so called African-Americans don’t even have an ounce of West African Ancestry!

A lot of people were Kidnapped & Captured from North Africa, The Middle East, India, Pakistan, Etc in slave raids.

    They were classified as “Mulattoes”

These slaves were cheaper than West African slaves, they were weaker & plentiful, also they wouldn’t rebel as much as the West African ones would.

The majority of West Africans were shipped to The Caribbean, & you can tell.

They are not telling us the whole truth about who they enslaved or shipped to the USA.

They want you to think that Every slave was from West Africa, but if that’s the case Why do so many black people in the USA look so Exotic?

  5. Prior to James, Charles and Cromwell, let us not forget the Barbary pirates of North Africa led slave taking raids in Ireland: The Sack of Baltimore, Co. Cork was one such occurrence.
on June 30, 1631 when pirates from Algiers and armed troops of the Turkish Ottoman Empire stormed ashore at the little harbour village of Baltimore.
A massacre took place when two Algerian galleys landed in the dead of night, sacked the town and bore off into slavery mostly women and children..
The sultans added the women and young girls to their harems. The men labored rowing the war ships chained to their stations. The boys indoctrinated into becoming the soldiers known as Janissaires.
Memoirs of the Lady Hester Stanhope, 1845. ‘I have discovered the origin of the Irish as well as that of the Scotch. The Irish are from a tribe of Arabs, the most distinguished in the desert, whose women, for many thousand years have been famous for their beauty, and the men likewise for their strong attachments’.
    So ??????? ?????

  6. To all you skeptics1
The British government has accepted resposibility for the placing if Irish slaves in the caribbean islans. As late as 2008 a seving British diplomat arrive in St Michaels church in Bridgetown, Barbados. His mission was to read a formal letter from the British government
apologising to the Irish and blacks descendats for the slavery of their forfathers in Barbados. I happened to be in the church for the reading

  7. egypt is the house. the place on the map is the original place that slavery began, this wasnt its original name. the fail to metion every time that the twelve tribes of israel are the only people that were promised heaven. this is why they will never tell you who you are or were you are from. TO MUCH LIKE RIGHT. that is why the world is mixed up. the true bible was not intended for all, only those tribes but when they got a peek and saw what they were to become, fear set in, anger arose. knowing they hade time do to our disobedience they struck and broke our religion and language.this why the didnt allow use to keep our religion because it kept us to close to god. our language was taken because the couldn’t take the chance on us communicating with our heavenly father. HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED WHY blacks learn so quickly, adapt to any situation, or are so possessive, need to lead, or how all of a sudden there is nothing we cant do. our days of bondage are over now we just have to reconnect with our father in heaven. 144,000 is the greatest number known to his true followers. 12,000 from every tribe is who he has chosen to take like a thief in the night. DONT GET LEFT GET RIGHT. so yes is my answer to everyone, people were taken from everywhere around the world because it was our world to begin with to explore , enjoy be fruitful and multiply. but during the slavetrades every people that was taken, massacred, raped, sripped of their language, religion and ETC….were purposely picked and devilish things were on the minds of there captors. not every race sold in those times had that had this happen, but for those who did have faith and remember the promise that was made to you.
