Pfizer faces criminal charges over drug test fiasco

THE Federal Government yesterday filed fresh charges against Pfizer International Incorporated (PII), accusing seven of the company’s top officials of fraud and criminal breach of trust of its controversial drug test, popularly known as Trovan Clinical Trials, it carried out on Nigerian citizens in Kano in 1996, which had fatal results.

The charges were filed at a Federal High Court in Abuja against Pfizer and its top employees namely Isa Dutse, Scott Hopkins, Debra Williams, Mike Dunne, Samuel Ohuabunwa, Robert Buhl and William Steere. They are accused of alleged complicity in the drug trial, which resulted in the death of over 200 meningitis patients.

Nigerian President Canvasses Nuclear Power for Electricity

President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, has said Nigeria needs to develop capacity for the generation of electricity through nuclear power, which he said might end up being the only source of energy.

Yar’Adua also instructed the Ministry of Science and Technology to align proposals of the national programme for deployment of nuclear power for generation of electricity with the overall national policy on power.

He said these after the Director-general of the National Atomic Energy Commission, Dr Erepamo Osaisai, briefed him on its activities in a presentation titled, “National Programme for the Deployment of Nuclear Energy for Electricity generation in Nigeria,” at the State House yesterday.

The records of tens of thousands of British convicts sent to Australia from the end of the 18th Century have been put online for the first time.

Subscribers can browse names, date of conviction, the length of sentence and which penal colony they went to.

Ancestry.co.uk features records of 160,000 convicts transported to Australia between 1788 and 1868.

It is estimated two million Britons and 22% of Australians will have a convict ancestor listed in the records.

PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA–At the American Association of Physical Anthropologists meeting, held here from 28 to 31 March, a new report on the evolution of a gene for skin color suggested that Europeans acquired pale skin quite recently, perhaps only 6000 to 12,000 years ago.
