England’s first Moorish queen, mother of the black prince

Philippa was the daughter of William of Hainault, a lord in part of what is now Belgium. When she was nine the King of England, Edward II, decided that he would marry his son, the future Edward III, to her, and sent one of his bishops, a Bishop Stapeldon, to look at her. He described her thus:

“The lady whom we saw has not uncomely hair, betwixt blue-black and brown. Her head is cleaned shaped; her forehead high and broad, and standing somewhat forward. Her face narrows between the eyes, and the lower part of her face is still more narrow and slender than the forehead. Her eyes are blackish brown and deep. Her nose is fairly smooth and even, save that is somewhat broad at the tip and flattened, yet it is no snub nose. Her nostrils are also broad, her mouth fairly wide. Her lips somewhat full and especially the lower lip…all her limbs are well set and unmaimed, and nought is amiss so far as a man may see. Moreover, she is brown of skin all over, and much like her father, and in all things she is pleasant enough, as it seems to us.”

Four years later Prince Edward went to visit his bride-to-be and her family, and fell in live with her. She was betrothed to him and in 1327, when she was only 14, she arrived in England. The next year, when she was 15, they married and were crowned King and Queen in 1330 when she was heavily pregnant with her first child and only 17.

This first child was called Edward, like his father, but is better known as the Black Prince. Many say that he was called this because of the colour of his armour, but there are records that show that he was called ‘black’ when he was very small. The French called him ‘Le Noir’.

Philippa was a remarkable woman. She was very wise and was known and loved by the English for her kindliness and restraint. She would travel with her husband on his campaigns and take her children as well. When the King was abroad she ruled in his absence. Queen’s College in Oxford University was founded under her direction by her chaplain, Robert de Eglesfield in 1341 when she was 28. She brought many artists and scholars from Hainault who contributed to English culture.

When she died, Edward never really recovered, and she was much mourned by him and the country. King Edward had a beautiful sculpture made for her tomb which you can see today at Westminster Abbey.

  1. Hi,

There is always problem with people that want Black Africans be the origin of everything. Like proving a square is round. However, Libyans, were not black as black skinned. Libya means white or to the West of… ; khmt or Egypt means black, meaning to the north of… but it does notmeans black refering to the colour of the skin. The names like Libya, Eritrea, Egypt, Fenicia are names indicating only geographical directions. Then consider the fact that Europeans are not white as much as it is claimed and the fact that the Africans are not black as it is claimed. We do not know how to genetically define an European and we do not know how to genetically define an African. Genetically we know that todays Egyptian are basically not Arabs, the same goes for the s called Moors in Spain. Moors means Northeners, not black.

    1. Never ceases to amaze how europeans seek to distort history to suit their pathetic tastes, fyi the continent of Africa is black the ancient Egyptians, Moors etc were black African, you cave dwellers to to have several seats always inserting yourselves where you definitely do not belong or are wanted. prior to 6,000 yrs ago where was the European?

  2. No, dear Paul:
Please learn your world history, you have only a Eurocentric perspective, which is often corrupt. But you’re not at fault, it’s the way most people are miseducated. Let me introduce you to Queen Charlotte. Try reading THE MULATTO QUEEN: ENGLAND’S BLACK QUEEN. Don’t take my word for it do the research because that’s just what I intend to do for The Mother of the Black Prince. Read some history, you’ll be surprised how many lies you have been told.

  3. Queen Philippa descends from Emperor Mara of Ethiopia. Mara along with two more Ethiopian royal bloodlines, contribute to the percentage of Ethiopian heritage, explaining Philippa’s appearance. Mystery solved. The line as follows.:
Philippa has a very diverse ethnic background which also includes Hungarian, French, and more if you follow her other lines. They circle a good part of the globe for as far as they could travel then.

  4. I believe all the kings in the world are related all from black kings. I all the big eyes king from king of Benin Eweka to Pharaoh of Egypt to the Queen of England. Secret

  5. The word MOOR is derived from the original ANCIENT word OROMO
which means “black” as in ETHIOPIAN not light skin, wishy washy etc etc it means to be BLACK skinned, if you are white and have the surname Moore, morris, maurice etc etc then it proves your surnames are a lie! you didnt have surnames you stole all your names from the black moors…. and then told us we were given your names! haha

The Royal line in ALL countries are black ones, and to understand that you have to understand black peoples are the first peoples to ever exist on earth!, THE OWNERS.

Whites were the caucasian barbarians later known as vikings, saxons, jutes & angles..(among other things over the years, visigoths etc)
On arrival to briton (correct spelling) and the area now called europe all these barbarous tribes were raiding, stealing gold and raping a race that already lived on the land!..A black race (fact)… gold is not found in wiltshire, it comes from africa and always has! So is the lion which is found on the royal standard..the lion is not english lol (british & english are two totally different peoples)
English are a mixture of vikings, saxons , angles & jutes
Britons are the original black race
A white man could never be British! ha….oh the irony

    The History – Heradotus
    Anacalypsis – Godfrey Higgins

    1. Some of that is true, but the vikings we also Moors. All Medieval history is Moorish history and all wars that were going on back during ancient times were technically Moors fighting Moors. Norseman aka Northman or NorthMaurs are who the Vikings who are known as “King of the Bays(Bey)”. We controlled the water ways and ports during those times .

  6. Wow!!!!! I’m black and just finding this out!! Hearing this makes me proud to be black??
But I always knew about the gold and diamond minds in Africa that God gave to us , to show the world how much he loves us??
