Nigeria Rescues 400 Stranded Cameroonians On The High Sea

NIGERIA yesterday rescued no fewer than four hundred Cameroonians from drowning in the high sea when their passenger vessels, conveying them to Cutonu, Republic of Benin to Gabon, ran short of fuel and drifted for several hours on the high sea.

The vessel, marked MT Liliana Carneiro flying Cameroonian flag ran shot of fuel 25 nautical miles away from the Lagos far away buoy.

It took the vessel the whole of Wednesday to relay a distress signal to the regional maritime search and rescue coordinating center of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), which later alerted other agencies for the rescue operation.

The rescue operation, which started at about 10am yesterday by a combined rescue team of the Nigerian Port Authority (NPA) and NIMASA, was not completely until about 4:30pm yesterday. The operation was coordinated for the two agencies by Landfall Nigeria Limited, which used it Hi-Tech equipments to tow the passenger vessel, carrying mostly women and children on board to anchorage Comdole-Pool in Lagos.

At about 3pm when the tugboat from Lagos arrived the scene, the passengers heaved huge sign of relieves as they excitedly chorused Up Nigeria!!!

As at press time, the owner of the vessel could not be identified or located for interrogation but one of the crew personnel said they needed only bunker and fresh water from the Nigeria authorities to continue their voyage.

Many of the passengers, looking dehydrated, said they would need some food items to sustain them until they get to their destination.

The items required were later supplied by Landfall Nigeria Limited, which it management said yesterday, it would later send their bill NPA for remittance of
