Undisputed god of Congolese Rhumba, Franco was a prolific writer and producer of music turning out more than 100 albums in his life and more than 1000 songs. He was among the foremost exponents of Congolese rumba, that brand of music from Central Africa that was to hypnotize the rest of Africa coast to coast, and later went on to conquer the world.

Rhumba, African originated hi-life music, reminiscent of latin/creole music but overlayered with lingala rythym and melodies, this brand of music is instantly recognizable across the world today thanks to the efforts of giants of music like Franco Luambo. As a founder of the seminal group OK Jazz, he is counted as one of the originators of the modern Congolese sound.

Franco’s musical journey bestraddled over 40 years of sharing out sheer music delights. He was one of the first Congolese musician to become an international star thanks to his years of self exile in France.

He introduced the Europe and the world to vintage African music and later returned to Congo to reclaim his status as the king of music and the “sorcerer of the guitar”. He died on October 1989.
