Nipplegate: A Real Media Scandal?
By Eyecalone (February 8th, 2004)
I hate to beat a dead horse but seeing how so many people are riding this bad boy I figured I'd at least try and make some glue.
So everybody is talking about "Nipplegate", which is partially what Janet Jackson intended and yes it was an inappropriate, excessive, and poorly-timed, publicity stunt, but is a breast, something every human being has - that this society just happens to have sexualized beyond recognition (in the case of women) - this important? Is Janet's mostly obscured areola, the downfall of the American broadcast television?
The National Coalition on Television Violence estimates that an American child will witness 8,000 murders & 100,000 acts of violence on television by the time they finish elementary school - and let's not talk about sex, with sexually charged and suggestive programming dominating the programming spectrum. The selective outrage, false piety, and bogus moral posturing of the people directing the campaign against Jackson -in this case Janet - is an indictment of the media and American culture in general.
The Christian fundamentalist, religious white - excuse me - religious right is up in arms as well as the self-appointed, "guardians of all that's good in America". I wouldn't be surprised if they attempted to organize a boycott of Janet - although I didn't hear much from them when Britney and Madonna were spit swapping on stage, despite the notoriously anti-homosexual orientations of their perspective. Michael Powell, son of Secretary of State Colin Powell, who heads the FCC orders an investigation of the incident yet he does everything in his power ignore the public's interest & help gigantic media conglomerates such as Viacom (who owns CBS and MTV incidentally) become even bigger. Meanwhile a private company, CBS, refuses to air ADs on the PUBLIC airwaves, from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, and the liberal group moveon.org claiming they are advocacy and "controversial" issue ads, yet ads for the Whitehouse, beer, and pharmaceutical companies offered no such conflicts. I beg your pardon I thought AD was short for advertisement, which is advocacy.
The whole halftime show was about sex but so is most of network television & entertainment, as it has been for some time now, including commercials full of crass humor and lewd innuendo, not to mention commercials for 3 separate drugs for male sexual dysfunction - how appropriate for such a sexually dysfunctional society. Remember models with triple-D cup bras do get soaking wet & wrestle over whether a beer "taste great or is less filling" because it's all about sex, violence, . "and ….and those twins". This bullcrap "scandal" is probably as much a veiled way of punishing Janet's accused child molester brother, Michael, as it is anything else. Using Luther Vandross' health as an excuse, the Grammy's tells Janet she won't be able to present an award as planned, yet they still have her accomplice, Timberlake, scheduled to perform as well as R.Kelly whose actions are on videotape (even though he has not yet gone on trial). You have to love the consistency of the moral Gestapo.
Incensed by less than 2 seconds of partial nudity, the American political and media establishment has no problem accepting the looting of the economy by crony capitalist & corporate criminals; they have no problem with a compromised and whitewashed "investigation" of the events of September 11th; they have no problem with ten of thousands of dead & injured Iraqis their country physically & politically in shambles; they have no problem with 500+ dead G.I.s and 10,000+ more physically and/or psychologically maimed; they utter hardly a harsh word for wars based on lies that were all known to be demonstrably false before the start of the conflict; they have no problem with the CIA and Whitehouse play ping-pong with "the blame" for the non-existence of Iraq's alleged "Weapons of Mass Destruction", when it's well documented that the plan to overthrow Hussein and steal Iraq's oil were in place before the current government was even installed. None of this, nor the media's outright complicity in all the lies & disinformation, being force-fed to the American populace is the media scandal, but a near bare breast is!
Give me a phuckin break! Give us all a phuckin break!
