Ministry Set to Utilize Alternative Energy Sources

Efforts geared toward exploitation of alternative energy sources have been in progress besides ensuring efficient utilization of the hydropower potential of the nation, the Ministry of Mines and Energy said.

The ministry said various countries have been providing assistances in support of national efforts in identifying and developing alternative energy sources.

Minister of Mines and Energy, Alemayehu Tegenu told ENA recently that geothermal energy available in the Rift Valley area was proved to produce up to 700 mega watt.

Accordingly, detailed studies have been underway to utilize the geothermal energy located in various sites of the nation, he said, adding activities are in progress to launch a geothermal energy centre located in Alleltu Langano in Oromia State.

Alemayehu said efforts are also underway to fulfill the national demand of energy through utilization of wind and solar energy sources.

He said an aid agreement was signed with German Geological Survey with a view to identifying the magnitude of geothermal energy resource in Tendaho area during the current budget year.
