Last time, I was telling you about yoga, its benefits, and the yoga practice at Africa House. I can imagine a few raised eyebrows, and something like this coming out of your mouth: Yoga, Africa House, but I thought Africa House is an art gallery. Yoga?
Today, I am introducing you to my beautiful yoga teacher, the wonderful and exuberant Cheryl, co-owner of Vishnu's Couch Yoga Studio in downtown Binghamton. I like to think of Cheryl as a facilitator, a bone talker, drum beater, a beacon of light and inspiration, and the woman that can bring out the silly in you. While her practice is Hatha yoga, she combines various types of yoga to create the Cheryl Blend. If you want a workout, meditation, or deep muscle stretch, she got you. If there is an MC for yoga, Cheryl will be one. She just knows what you need and how much of it you need. It is a blessing to do yoga with Cheryl in the tranquility of an art gallery, where you can let go, and give your burden and all the things weighing you down to Mother Earth and watch the transformation. So that when you rise from Shavasana pose, you feel lifted and nourished.
According to Yoga Journal, this pose alone “...helps relieve mild depression, high blood pressure, headaches, fatigue, and insomnia...can calm the nervous system and promote equanimity in your entire body. Fatigued muscles get to relax, tense shoulders and jaws soften, and the eyes quiet down to reflect a quieter state of mind.”
Who doesn't want that?
