Artist Biography

Chris Bahr

I was born in Santa Monica, CA in 1967. It was the summer of love in the county named for the City of Angels, LA. My family lived in Playa del Rey or “Place of the Sun,” so it seems only natural as a child of this atmosphere that I’d end up seeking illumination through the medium of art.

After receiving a BFA in Metalsmithing from SUNY New Paltz and an undeclared minor in Theater Arts in 1993, I went on to assist a class at Bennington College in a summer program for artists, ANE (Art New England). I then went on to do an immersion program at Penland School of Craft in North Carolina in Book Arts, Letterpress and Papermaking. I created an limited edition of books some of which are now in special collections in libraries. I continued my studies at the University of Wisconsin Madison in the graphic arts at the graduate level as well as interning with a professional book artist in Racine, WI. I sorted type at Columbia Book and Paper Center in Chicago, Illinois under the direction of Audrey Niffeneger, book artist and well-known author of The Time Traveler’s Wife.

After moving back to upstate New York in 1996, I worked with artists, collaborating on exhibitions and art as well as having solo exhibitions, group exhibitions, including the annual Rude and Bold Women Exhibition. I taught book arts and papermaking both privately and at BCC, Binghamton University and Marywood College. I furthered my knowledge in the field by taking workshops with well-known book and paper artists in the area.

After a solo exhibition of the works seen in this exhibition at The ART Mission and Theater, I was invited to join the staff as gallery manager/curator of the organization, which I did for four years. Working at a local upscale ceramic design studio is my current profession, at JSchatz in Greene, NY.

I have designed and completed art for many local businesses as well as participated in many public art programs, most recently designing a dinosaur for HART of BC project in Binghamton, NY.

My work is now primarily in mixed media painting and installation art. I continue to reside and work in upstate NY.
