Professor Nkiru Nzegwu, the chair of Africana Studies Department at Binghamton University, developed the first-ever Hip-Hop class in the University history in 2002. The course examines this black urban expressive culture as a global and cultural phenomenon. Through class readings, group exercises and performance, students learned the history and hip-hop emergence in global and cultural spaces. Toni Blackman, the Hip-Hop ambassador was an adjunct lecturer for the course.
