No swine flu in Africa, WHO declares

Raises pandemic alert to phase five

By Chukwuma Muanya (with agency reports)

ALTHOUGH swine flu has been reported in nine countries, the World Health Organisation (WHO) says it is yet to be traced in Africa.

WHO’s assertion yesterday came amid claims that two cases have been unearthed in south Africa.

The Africa Regional Office of the World Health Organisation (AFRO), in a statement yesterday, said from available statistics, no case of the flu has been reported in Africa.

The Pan-African News Agency (PANA) quoted a statement issued in Brazzaville, Congo, by WHO-AFRO as saying that the body was yet to notice the disease in the continent.
The health agency, however, said it had put in place a programme to combat the potential spread of the disease to Africa.

By Tuesday, the flu had been officially reported in nine nations, mostly in Europe and the Americas.
