The Nigerian Police and State make Economic War on Innocent Farmers and Traders

The police in Auchi, Edo State have arrested an unnamed aide of a member of the House of Representatives from Zamfara State with bags of cannabis.

A statement from the Edo State Police Command on Wednesday said the aide was arrested in a 407 Peugeot car with registration no NASS FL 142 REP. The statement said the suspect was the lone occupant of the vehicle, which was conveying 10 bags of weeds suspected to be Indian hemp.

The command said the suspect had made a confessional statement to the police, which would aid investigation.

In a telephone interview with one of our correspondents, the Commander, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Edo State Command, Mr. Okey Ihebon, confirmed the incident. He said the police had not yet transferred the case to the command.

Meanwhile, the Ondo State Police Command said on Wednesday that its men had intercepted a truck loaded with bags of cannabis in Oke-Agbe area of the state. The police said the illicit consignment was packed in three chairs and sachets of powdered milk.

The police said the driver of the vehicle, Mr. Emmanuel Umaru, claimed that it was carrying sachets of dry milk and chairs, when it was intercepted.

The Acting Public Relations Officer of the command, Mr. Wole Ogodo, told journalists in Akure that policemen attached to Oke-Agbe division impounded the vehicle after a thorough search. He said the chairs in the truck and a drum filled with bags of Indian hemp were also seized.

The police spokesman said the truck driver and the alleged owner of the consignment, Jonathan Godwin, were being detained by the police.

Ogodo added that during interrogation, Jonathan confessed that he was not the sole owner of the substance.

He said, “We are still investigating the matter in order to get to the source of the cannabis, so that we can apprehend others that have been mentioned by the suspects.”
