How an Enslaved Ethiopian Became a South African Teacher

When Neville Alexander used to visit his maternal grandmother Bisho Jarsa as a boy, he never suspected the extraordinary story of how she had come from Ethiopia to the South African city of Port Elizabeth.

Bisho was one of a group of Ethiopian slaves freed by a British warship in 1888 off the coast of Yemen, then taken round the African coast and placed in the care of missionaries in South Africa.

Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Wangari Maathai Dies

NAIROBI, Kenya, Sep 26 – 2004 Nobel Peace prize winner and environmentalist Wangari Maathai has died while undergoing treatment at the Nairobi Hospital.

Prof Maathai succumbed to ovarian cancer at 11pm on Sunday night, just over a year since she was diagnosed with cancer, in July 2010.

The 71-year-old political activist is well known for her constant battles with government to protect Kenya’s forests.

Award-Winning Playwright Efo Kodjo Mawugbe Dies

Information reaching Myjoyonline.com Wednesday say the renowned playwright, who is also Director of the National Theatre, died in the early hours of Wednesday at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital where he had been on admission for some weeks.

The late Mawugbe was being treated for prostate cancer and paralysis, a source close to the family told Myjoyonline.com.

Efo was renowned for his writing prowess in drama. He was winner of the BBC's International Radio Playwriting Competition 2009 with his play, The Prison Graduates. His play was selected out of 12,000 entries across the world.

What has Libyan War Unleashed on Africa?

WASHINGTON (FinalCall.com) - Even as Western European leaders boast of their roles in the overthrow of the Libyan government of Col. Muammar Gadhafi, African leaders who were at first silent about the plot have begun voicing their opposition to the campaign. The African Union (AU) has withheld its recognition of the ruling National Transitional Council (NTC), and a group of 200 concerned African leaders have issued a statement warning about Africa being re-colonized by NATO's European powers.
