REMINISCING

Reminiscing is a review of paintings and drawings created in the past.  The exhibition provided me with the opportunity to share a nonrepresentative sample of works I produced in three distinct periods—in the mid-1970s, in the mid-1980s and in the early 1990s. These works “survived” only because I was reluctant to part with them, and chose to keep them. Others are out there. I do not know how they are doing; but I hope they are providing joy to whomever owns them. 

The three historical periods were significant periods of my life and holds a key to some of the paintings I did at the time. Emerging from memories of the Biafran War, The Flower of Eve began as an exploration and reflection on philosophical issues of life, particularly a child’s transition from childhood to adulthood. Concerned with the psychological nature of the changes, I zeroed in on puberty, on the moment of passage into adulthood.  I deliberately chose a figurative rather than an abstract style of representation to capture the quandary, the perplexity of bodily fluids, the embarrassment of bodily changes, and the unease that accompanies maturation. Other times, I have found the abstract style a more eloquently means of expressing, as is the case with Rupture. Then, I am compelled to portray what I mean without the need to be explicit.

Reminiscing is the first exhibition at the newly renovated Africa House in Endicott. The exhibition features the work of Dr. Nkiru Nzegwu, an Emmy award winning producer, philosopher, art historian and artist. The exhibition will include a lecture and Q&A. This event is free and open to the public.
