Open Source Restyled: The New Model for Academic Journal Publishing

This paper will focus primarily on the utilization of freeware open-source technologies in academic publishing. The discovery of free software by journal editors is changing the type of knowledge produced, as well as creating a community of new and exciting content producers and publishers. Some of these producers were prevented from participating in traditional print publications by numerous factors, and some of the publishers did not have the financial resources to pursue and sustain a costly venture. Now, the availability of free software has made it possible to cater to a range of academic goals and to produce first rate electronic journals. The aim of this paper is twofold: the first is to discuss the development of open source tools for academic publishing, and the second is to examine the necessary specifications for developing and maintaining peer-reviewed electronic journals. I will analyze the primary requirements, protocols and standards necessary for creating an electronic academic journal and ensuring a successful venture.
