Aba Na Anya

|
Remember the days
spent with family
along Onitsha-Owerri Road,
on the way to Aba,
Enyimba city.
With Jimmy Cliff
and his melodious voice.
Michael Jackson had his
Liberian girl then.
Randy came for the ride
once in a freaking while,
only to be dropped off
at FUTO,
lucky citadel.
Rain made wet and dreamy
the hours wasted
jam-packed in a Toyota Crown.
Jamaica beckoned ever so
softly with Jimmy's "Originator".
Love was passed around
with jokes and tales.
Aba became the romance novel
read in between weekends.
With rainy streets and
dark boys looking so good
in the heavily-lidded eyes
of an adolescent girl.
Weekend get-away of
the mechanical kind
never were as inviting as
those days and nights
in Aba,
Enyimba city.
In Sister big Sister's joint,
watching old girls pretend
and still didn't fool anybody
in "A woman of substance"
or was it "LACE"?.
For the first time,
finding a food allergy
in cold Akammu and colder plantains.
The concrete accepted them
as they were thrown up and out.
Saturday morning in Aba,
Enyimba city,
loving memories,
loving dreams. |
