Leaving Home Print
Hushed voice and old age
under Onitsha's sky
old hands play Ludo in the parlor
curious faces of children watch as old hands move swiftly across the board
outside
young stable legs jump inside the swell
and the chorus of young girls fills the parlor

Grand mama's voice reverberates bouncing off concrete walls
demanding order and attention of young children near
her brown ironed hands close the red potomanto with silver padlock
waiting to be carried across the Atlantic
to be emptied and closed again

Years of talking fill the fluorescent beige room
pacing feet brushed on the linoleum cement
and children with white dresses and broad smiles
jump up and down momentarily on the green sofa

She opens and closes the potomanto
it clicks
with her hands on her hips, and a wide smile
the feeling of change lingers
